The Dragon – Part 7

The Predator Taskforce

Jacky arrived at Police Headquarters in Arsenal Street and reported to the Homicide Division on the 17th Floor. He identified himself and was shown into Superintendent Shum’s office. He was warmly welcomed by Shum who shook his hand and asked him to take a seat. He picked up his phone and called someone. Then he turned to Jacky.

“In order to save time I want you to watch a video presentation we’ve compiled. I’ll talk you through it and you can ask any questions afterwards”.

They walked a few doors down to a room in which a DVD player was set up in front of a widescreen monitor. Several other officers entered the room and nodded to him, they would be introduced later. One of them placed a ‘Do Not Enter’ sign on the outside of the door and they all took their seats.

Jacky watched as the screen came to life. It was obviously a homemade presentation, probably made by one of the officers present.

The first picture shown was one of a body, part of a body, the condition of the body was similar to the one Jacky had seen earlier that day. On this occasion, both arms had been removed just below the elbow. The victim looked to have been a plump lady judging by her face. But it was her eyes that caught Jacky’s attention. The horror in her eyes. Then Shum was talking.

“This is the first known victim of an assailant that we’ve called the Predator. At the moment we believe he works alone as this is what the crime scene evidence has shown so far. However, we’re not ruling out an accomplice.” The scene changed.

This one was of a full-body shot. Or what should have been a full body. Both legs and part of one arm were missing. Once again Jacky’s eyes, however, were drawn to the face, and the victim’s expression.

“Victim number two,” said Shum. This one differs from the others in that, the ones we have managed to identify so far have all been prostitutes, this was a young woman with no criminal record of any kind, she was the daughter of a good family living in Yau Yat Tsuen.

The screen changed again and again, eight times. Shut talked Jacky through each victim. Eight victims were in various states of dismemberment and the only feature that struck Jacky, again and again, were the eyes. They were open and staring, as if at some horror, some unspeakable horror.
